Winfred Rembert was born in rural southwest Georgia in the town of Cuthbert in 1945. He had a very difficult childhood as his grandmother raised him. He grew up during the turmoil of the 1950's, 60's and early 70's. He is a self-taught artist whose unique style emerged in the late 1990's. Mr. Rembert paints scenes of his remembrances of growing up in the segregated south. His "canvas" is cowhide upon which he incises, tools and then paints these unique scenes in vivid colors.
